1
Material Preparation
Proper powder preparation is critical for coating quality.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Drying Temperature | 150°C |
| Drying Time | 3+ hours |
| Recommended Form | -MP140 (106 µm) |
⚠️ Important: Never skip the drying step. Moisture causes pinholes, bubbles, and poor adhesion.
2
Substrate Preparation
Surface preparation determines 80% of coating success.
- Degrease with appropriate solvent (acetone, MEK)
- Grit blast to SA 2.5 / 50-75 µm profile
- Remove all blast residue with clean, dry air
- Apply primer if required (see recommendations)
- Coat within 4 hours of surface preparation
💡 Primer Recommendation: For carbon steel substrates with PEEK materials, consider a chromate-free primer for enhanced adhesion and corrosion protection.

Application Parameters
Electrostatic Spray Settings
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Voltage | 60-80 kV |
| Gun-to-Part Distance | 150-250 mm |
| Powder Flow Rate | 100-150 g/min |
| Air Pressure | 2-4 bar |
| Passes Required | 2-3 passes |
4
Curing Schedule
Follow this timeline for optimal coating properties:
🔥
Preheat
15 min
📈
Ramp Up
5-10°C/min
⏱️
Hold at Peak
20-30 min
❄️
Cool Down
Slow cool
| Phase | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Peak Cure Temperature | 380-400°C | 20-30 min |
| Substrate Minimum | Above Tg (143°C) | Throughout cure |
⚠️ Cooling Critical: Allow parts to cool slowly in the oven. Rapid cooling causes residual stress and may lead to cracking or delamination.
5
Quality Inspection
- Visual inspection for defects (pinholes, orange peel, runs)
- Thickness measurement (target: 0.3 mm ± 10%)
- Adhesion test (cross-hatch or pull-off per ASTM D3359)
- Holiday/pinhole detection (if specified)
- Document batch number, cure parameters, and test results
